Introduction

Thank you for taking part in this survey on open strategies in Generative AI (GenAI). The rapid growth of GenAI has introduced diverse approaches to model creation, sharing, and deployment, particularly around openness. This survey aims to capture insights from AI model creators and users to understand practices, challenges, and perspectives on open strategies in AI.
Your input will help shape discussions on transparency, collaboration, and innovation, providing valuable data for analyzing the impact of open and closed approaches in AI development and applications.

Definitions

Definition of "Model Producer"
A model producer is an entity (individual, organization, or system) responsible for the development, training, fine-tuning, or adaptation of AI models. They play a key role in the creation and refinement of machine learning or generative models, either from scratch or by fine-tuning pre-trained models for specific applications. Model producers manage the entire model lifecycle, including data collection, model design, training, optimization, and deployment. Examples include organizations like OpenAI, Google, and others that produce foundational models or fine-tune them for specialized tasks.

Definition of "Model User"
A model user is an entity (individual, organization, or system) that leverages pre-existing AI models for specific tasks without directly engaging in the process of training or creating these models. Model users typically integrate or apply models into their systems or solutions to enhance their functionality. They may use techniques like Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) or other enhancements but do not modify the model’s core architecture or produce new versions of it. Examples include companies that utilize OpenAI’s GPT for chatbots, or those integrating generative models into applications to generate text, images, or other content.
